The varsity girls finish the regular season 16-3. What some thought would be a rebuilding year for the defending state champs has turned into a third straight region regular season championship and a number one ranking in state. The girls lost 4 starters from last years championship team but they have returned as the team to beat at state again this year. Shelby Bottoms passed 1,000 points last week for her career in varsity basketball; 9th-12th. The VG play the winner of the 4/5 game on Friday at Lowcountry at 5:30. Shelby Bottoms who is the defending MVP from last years season in SCISA, has had a huge year. Rebekah Duggan has dominated the board's and she had several huge games offensively. The winner advances to the Region playoff championship on Saturday at Lowcountry. By winning the regular season, the girls are given an automatic state bid. Coach Bethany Smith will once again be the region "Coach of the Year" for the second straight season. Coach Smith's record the last two years is currently at 43-5. Our girls region has the top 3 teams in state, all ranked 1-3. All games have went to the buzzer and our region is clearly the one to beat. Expect the state championship to feature two teams from our region this year.
The varsity boys have experienced highs and lows all season but have improved each game and they are now playing very well. They are currently ranked 7th at state and are 10-8 overall. They finished as the third seed for the regional upcoming tournament. Andrew Gooch has led the way with rebounds and offense. Tyrell Thomas has stepped up offensively and in leadership. The boys strong win against Coastal Academy, who are currently ranked 6th at state, clearly showed they are ready for the playoffs. The boys region has four teams who are capable of winning region and state; we are clearly one of them. The VB will play on Friday against the 3rd ranked team at state, Christian Academy. The winner plays in the championship and the loser will play for 3rd place on Saturday at Lowcountry. These games are very important as the VB boys seek a state bid for the third straight year.
The JVG have improved all year and will advance to the JV regional tournament hosted at JICS! Their strong win against Coastal on Monday secured a tournament spot. Adrienne Schwartz, Amy McKenna, and Rachel Leshorn have led the team all season. Coach Wetter has done an amazing job in developing this young team who are mostly MS athletes playing against high school students. The JVG will play against PCA at 5:15 on Monday the 14th at JICS.
Coach Andrew Smith took a JV team who finished last year at 6-13 and they are currently 9-7. The boys win against Coastal helped them get the 4th spot at the JV regional tournament. They will play PCA on Monday the 14th at 7:45 at JICS. Austen Condon and Thomas Scarborough have been leader's offensively all season. Ben Hamilton has dominated the boards all year and he has been a strong leader on and off the court.
You can keep track of results and future games by looking on each teams schedule. The results will be updated within 24 hours.
We also have directions to Lowcountry for the varsity regional tournament. Please come out and support the teams this Friday, Saturday and at home on Monday!
